Santorini - May 2002
Santorini was the sight of the world's greatest volcano explosion which was so dramatic it created a mini ice age and threw the world into darkness. At the time it was an important trading post for the Minoan civilisation who lived in Crete.
The sea in the background is the centre of the doughnut shaped island. The centre of the island was blown out during the eruption.
The most famous pictures of Greece often feature the white buildings on the hill-side town of Thira.
This hotel is typical of the architecture seen all over Santorini.
